Let Your Heart Unwind on Local Detours

Local Infrastructure Within a 10-Minute Walk

You won’t find flashy tourist attractions filling up guidebooks around Tiny House ZEN Kurahashi. Instead, everything you need to relax your mind—natural hot springs, seaside cafés, and a beautiful ancient beach—is right here within a 10-minute walk.

TForget minute-by-minute schedules; just take a stroll wherever the wind leads you. Here are some local detours to help you enjoy the entire island as your own “private backyard,” with our secret base at the center.

♨️ Melt into the Sea and Sky at a Natural Hot Spring

Kurahashi Katsuragahama Onsen-kan (8-min walk)

A natural hot spring right by the sea, loved by locals. As you sweat in the sauna or soak in the free-flowing spring water, the boundaries between the sea, the sky, and time will slowly melt away. Experience the comfort of immersing yourself in “everyday local life” rather than a commercial tourist spa.

Soothe Your Senses at Seaside Cafés

Scattered around Tiny House ZEN are places to truly relax your mind, quite different from typical tourist spots.

cafe SLOW (7-min walk) / Cafe Alpha (6-min walk) / Oshokudokoro Kazu (3-min walk)

njoy breakfast or a locally sourced lunch right by the water, feeling the sea breeze. At cafe SLOW, you can also enjoy paddleboarding (SUP) and hassle-free BBQ.

The flickering charcoal flames like a bonfire, the scent of the ocean breeze—delicious moments that soothe all five senses await you here. (The image on the right shows the breakfast set at Cafe Alpha.)

🏖️ An Ancient Breeze at One of Japan’s Top 100 Beaches

Katsuragahama Beach (5-min walk)

An exotic sandy beach featuring crystal clear waters and a beautiful pine grove. This is a historical site even mentioned in the Manyoshu (Japan’s oldest anthology of poetry). A morning stroll along the shore to the rhythm of the Nagi (calm waters) is the ultimate retreat for restoring your mind and body.

⛩️ A Stroll Through the Island’s Memory and History

“Ships that carry prayers, an island that carves memories”

A magnificent pine tree stands along the approach to Katsuragahama Shrine. Its roots run deep, quietly embracing this land, having absorbed the sea breeze and the prayers of people countless times.

Feel your heart quietly settle as you walk down silent alleys lined with traditional folk houses and visit historic old temples adorned with beautiful cherry blossoms. Unlike many shrines that guide people “from the mountains to the village” or “from the village to the town,” at Katsuragahama Shrine, the destination of prayer is the sea. (The image on the right shows the ruins of a stone quarry. The stones used for the National Diet Building in Tokyo were sourced right here from Kurahashi Island.)

⛰️ A Mini Adventure Overlooking the Archipelago

● Light Hiking on Mt. Hiyama

Towering behind our retreat is Mt. Hiyama. You can enjoy a hike from the base or drive up near the summit. From the top, an overwhelming 360-degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea islands stretches all the way to the Shikoku region.

● Sunset Cruises & Marine Activities

Enjoy a weekend-only sunset cruise gliding through golden waters, or experience a local fishing boat ride. In the summer, you can fully enjoy the crystal clear sea by snorkeling.

A Recommendation for Extended Stays (A Small Resort Experience)

With a supermarket and a heated indoor pool within walking distance, Kurahashi Island is perfectly equipped for a “live like a local” stay. Go a little further, and you will find endless deep explorations, including a Kimono Museum, a Sake Brewery, and a Rolls-Royce Museum. Even a simple drive around the island will reveal countless unnamed yet beautiful photo spots. We highly recommend staying for two or three nights to fully savor the island at your own pace.

While driving, you might spot yacht-building companies—fitting for an island famous for its ships.

There are numerous breathtaking sunset spots, offering deeply moving experiences that can only be truly felt by staying overnight on the island.

Praised in the ancient Manyoshu, Kurahashi is home to historic temples with beautiful cherry blossoms. The local villages are dotted with numerous shrines and temples, keeping traditional faith beautifully alive.

There are great fishing spots and fishing boats nearby. A home improvement store selling fishing gear and bait is about a 7-minute drive away.
